BASIS’ mission is to put sustainability at the heart of sport – from grassroots to elite level, running through policy in our sector and in government. We are at an exciting moment in our evolution as an organisation, but we know that the next phase of our journey is critical. The climate crisis is accelerating, and sport must play its part in leading positive change. That’s why we’re inviting passionate, forward-thinking individuals to join our Board.
Why Join the BASIS Board?
As a Board Member, you’ll play a vital role in shaping the long-term direction of BASIS, providing strategic oversight, and helping us grow our impact across the UK sports system. It’s an exciting time to get involved: we’re growing the breadth and quality of the support we’re providing to sports organisations across the UK.
We’re looking for individuals committed to making sport in the UK a world leader in sustainability, and who believe in the power of sport to inspire and influence positive change.
How the Board Works
Our Board is made up of a mix of:
- Elected Members – representatives from Full BASIS Member organisations, voted in by fellow members.
- Independent Members – individuals with relevant expertise or insight from outside the membership.
- Co-opted Members – invited to bring specific skills or perspectives to the table.
We aim for a Board that reflects the full diversity of the sector – across sport types, communities, and lived experiences. We follow the Code for Sports Governance, and we’re always working to strengthen our transparency, inclusivity, and effectiveness.
Time Commitment
The Board meets around six times a year, mostly online, with two in-person meetings annually. Each meeting lasts about two hours. Most Board Members also join a sub-committee or working group, which may add 6-12 hours per year. We’ll send you materials ahead of meetings so you’re well-briefed and ready to contribute.
From time to time, we’ll ask Board Members to get more involved – perhaps supporting a webinar, contributing to our Conference or Awards, or helping steer a specific initiative. The more you put in, the more you, your organisation, and our members will benefit.
How to Stand
We have a number of Board positions up for election this year. Each elected term lasts three years. If we receive more nominations than available places, we’ll hold a vote among Full Members.
If you represent a Full BASIS Member organisation, we’d love you to consider putting yourself forward – or encouraging a colleague who’d be a great fit.
Nominations are now open and will close at 23:59 on Friday 25th July 2025.
To nominate yourself (or someone else), or to ask any questions, please contact our Chair, Russell Seymour, at [email protected].
This is your chance to step up, speak out, and help drive a more sustainable future for sport. We hope you’ll join us.
