The UK Government’s ‘Simpler Recycling’ regulations, effective from the end of this month, aim to standardise waste management practices across England, as part of a push to make recycling more straightforward and efficient.Â
These regulations will impact BASIS Members, so it is important for clubs, venues and governing bodies to understand these changes to ensure compliance and continue our collective effort to deliver environmental sustainability across sport.
Key Requirements of the Simpler Recycling Regulations
From 31 March 2025, all businesses and non-domestic premises in England with 10 or more full-time equivalent employees will be legally required to separate their waste into specific categories:
- Dry Recyclable Materials: This includes plastics, metals, glass, paper, and cardboard. These materials should be collected separately from other waste streams.
- Food Waste: All food waste must be segregated from general waste and other recyclables.
- Residual (Black Bin) Waste: Non-recyclable waste that cannot be classified under the above categories.
To clarify the scope, micro-firms – defined as businesses with fewer than 10 full-time equivalent employees – have an extended timeline and must comply with these regulations by 31 March 2027.Â
Implications for BASIS Members
A sizeable number of BASIS members are ahead of the game on recycling, but given that most BASIS members employ at least 10 people, it is important that members consider the required waste separation measures to ensure they are compliant. Failure to comply could result in legal repercussions and undermine the organisation’s commitment to sustainability.
Recommended Actions for Compliance
To align with the Simpler Recycling regulations, BASIS members should consider the following steps:
- Assess Current Waste Management Practices: Conduct a thorough review of existing waste disposal methods to identify areas that require modification.
- Implement Segregated Waste Bins: Introduce clearly labelled bins for each waste category — dry recyclables, food waste, and residual waste — throughout your facilities to encourage proper disposal.
- Engage with Waste Collection Services: Collaborate with your waste management provider to ensure they offer services that accommodate the separated waste streams as mandated by the new regulations. BASIS has waste management solution providers within our network of 12 Principles Partners.
- Educate Staff and Patrons: Provide training and informational materials to employees, athletes, and visitors about the importance of proper waste segregation and the specifics of the new system. BASIS will hold a waste management webinar in the coming months which could help with this.
- Monitor and Evaluate: Regularly assess the effectiveness of your waste management strategies and make adjustments as necessary to improve compliance and efficiency.
