We look back on the Campaign of the Year winner at the 2023 BASIS Awards
Envision Racing edged out Pledgeball and The World Relay to claim the Campaign of the Year title at the 2023 BASIS Award for the pioneering Recover E programme.
The Formula E world champions partnered with artist Liam ‘Lazerian’ Hopkins to build the world’s first fully electric and drivable formula race car constructed entirely from e-waste.
The environmentally conscious car is a testament to innovation, seamlessly integrating donated electronic relics donated by school children and young people.
Tens of thousands of iPhones, chargers, laptops, cables, game consoles, batteries, and even single-use vapes dance harmoniously to form the very sinews of this remarkable machine, in a bid to raise awareness about the dire need for recycling and repurposing our digital relics.
The visionary endeavour not only sparks excitement on the track but also shines a spotlight on the staggering global issue of e-waste.
The one-of-a-kind car was officially launched live on flagship BBC programme ‘The One Show’ prior to the London E-Prix finale in Season 9, which saw Envision Racing clinch the title in the final race of the year.
Alongside the functioning racing car, the team also ran a competition for youngsters aged 8-21 to design their own model car made out of their disused electronics.
The competition was run in partnership with Cartoon Network, with winners drawn from across the world.
The car, and the campaign, received worldwide attention – with coverage on the BBC, ITV, Forbes, Wired, CNN and USA Today – and was the focus for a special exhibition at COP28.
Electronic waste (‘e-waste’) has been identified by the World Health Organisation as the “next growing threat to the environment”.
The Envision campaign brought this threat alive in a unique and engaging way, reaching millions of people and inspiring them to re-think their approach to waste.
With so many phenomenal sustainability campaigns now underway across sport in the UK, the 2024 Campaign of the Year promises to be even more competitive.
Nominations are open and submissions of all shapes and sizes are welcome.
