The English Football League (EFL) has taken another step forward in its ambitions to improve environmental sustainability across the Championship, League One and League Two by joining the British Association for Sustainable Sport (BASIS).
BASIS membership will enable the EFL to access experience in sustainable sport best practice, as well as dedicated training and support services.
The latest announcement builds on the EFL’s work on environmental sustainability, which saw the launch of the EFL’s Green Clubs in October 2021.
As well as supporting Clubs the EFL is working to improve its own practices and in the last 12 months has reduced electricity use at EFL House by 26%, renewed its 100% renewable electricity tariff and supported Green Football Weekend.
Ben Fisher, Environmental Sustainability Officer for the EFL and EFL Trust, who will speak at BASIS’ National Sustainable Sport Conference on 29-30 April at Emirates Old Trafford, said:
“At the EFL we are committed to reducing our environmental impact and supporting our clubs and their community organisations to do the same. Whilst we acknowledge that there is still much to do our membership of BASIS is a key part of our continual improvement and highlights our commitment to further development on this work.”
BASIS General Manager, Dom Jordan, said:
“I am delighted to welcome the EFL as new BASIS members. The resources, support and services we can offer them and, by extension, the 72 football league clubs can make a tangible difference to sustainability in English football. Their decision to join adds to our growing momentum – the more organisations we work with, the bigger our impact will be, and I look forward to working with the EFL.”
