BASIS are delighted to announce Sport England Chairman Chris Boardman will be joining us at the BASIS 2024 National Sustainable Sport Conference, being held in Manchester on 29th & 30th April 2024 at the Emirates, Old Trafford.
An Olympic champion, world record holder and three-time Tour de France stage winner.
Chris was appointed as Greater Manchester’s first ever Cycling and Walking Commissioner in July 2017 by Mayor Andy Burnham.
His report, Made to Move, published in December 2017, set out a 15-step plan to transform how people get around in the city region. The plan has evolved into a £1.5 billion plan to create a world-class cycling and walking network with the first 100 miles of high-quality routes now being created.
In May 2021, Chris was appointed in an expanded role as Greater Manchester’s first ever Transport Commissioner, tasked with accelerating the delivery of the Bee Network – a fully integrated, city region-wide transport system.
He was appointed Chair of Sport England in July 2021 and recently expressed his support for the new commitment in the Government’s Get Active strategy, to ‘embed environmental sustainability as a pillar of funding agreements.’  Giving his commitment to work in partnership with the sector on when and how this is done.
In 2022 Chris was engaged by Government to set up and lead Active Travel England, a new Executive Agency of the Department of Transport, charged with delivering Government’s policy to get 50% of all journeys cycled or walked by 2030.
Chris will be speaking on our opening panel, a Leadership debate on how sustainability must be embedded across the sport sector and how this can be led from the top to shape and help ensure action is being taken within sport organisations.
He will also be joining the session on transport and travel, where, in his new role as Active Travel Commissioner for England, he will discuss how the work pioneered in Greater Manchester is now being scaled up across the country, and how the sport sector can get involved.
Focusing on Leadership and Action, with an exciting programme planned, to educate, engage and empower attendees to drive change within their sport organisations and the wider sport sector, the BASIS 2024 National Sustainable Sport Conference is a must attend event for all those serious about harnessing the power of sport to help build a sustainable future.
