We caught up with the 2025 winners of the Innovation: Technology, Products or Data Solutions Award, ITV Sport, to find out how things are going for them, and long-term lasting impact of the award has been.
Did winning the 2025 Innovation Award help your organisation in any tangible ways?
“It was such a positive things for us and our team – to win the first sustainability award was really big and helps us when we talk to suppliers to show them that we can work together to make really important change. It also made us eager to win another!”
How has your environmental or sustainability work evolved over the past year?
“We are definitely asking more questions of our suppliers and the venues we work at regarding what they are doing to become more green and have a positive impact on the environment. Without our supply chain engaging some of what we are working towards is unsustainable so we must make sure we’re not working alone and the whole industry is moving in the right direction.”
Looking back, what has been the most significant long-term impact of your project?
“Engaging stadiums that we visit regularly into speaking with power companies to supply them with green power more than just when they are the most cost effective solution. Offering advice and introductions at their requests means they are positively and actively engaging into becoming greener.”
What would you say to organisations considering entering the 2026 BASIS Sustainable Sport Awards?
“Do it! Anything you are doing no matter how small that has an impact on changing the way people think and act regarding sustainability is hugely positive and might even win your company an award! It’s so important to show that even small changes as well as big ones will have an impact.”
Case Study: ITV Sport’s UEFA Euro 2024 Sustainable Broadcast Project
ITV Sport’s UEFA Euro 2024 Sustainable Broadcast Project re-engineered live tournament coverage to demonstrate that major event broadcasts could be delivered sustainably without compromising quality. The project combined renewable power, remote production, reduced travel, set reuse, and lower impact logistics across operations in the UK and Germany.
ITV used 100% renewable energy at its UK hub and, for the first time at a major tournament, sourced 100% green energy on the ground, fully avoiding generator use. Battery-assisted UPS systems were also trialled to test whether high-demand broadcast equipment could switch reliably between renewable power supplies. A remote-gallery workflow halved the number of overall crew in Germany, reducing flights, hotel stays, and freight, with 90% of domestic travel occurring by train; commentators covered several matches off-tube from London.
The project also repurposed existing set infrastructure, used LED lighting throughout, eliminated single use plastic bottles, and introduced reusable glass containers and catering equipment. Local suppliers, crew, and accommodation were prioritised, with crew and talent staying at a sustainably operated hotel within walking distance of the studio, reducing taxi journeys while supporting staff wellbeing.
The tournament became a live research and development project, with engineers capturing data on energy use, power switching, and operational resilience. This knowledge has since supported collaboration with suppliers developing battery based solutions for future outside broadcasts, while ITV has also shared its learning with sporting venues preparing for the next generation of mobile power solutions.
The project demonstrated that sustainable broadcasting could deliver environmental, operational, and financial benefits alongside creative excellence. By reducing the environmental impact of the broadcast layer of a major global sporting event, ITV Sport showed how broadcasters could use their influence to drive wider change across sport and the production industry.
