Cornwall & London played host to this ambitious conference, with the passion, creativity and energy you would expect if you have been following the campaigning of Surfers Against Sewage – who successfully hosted the Global Annual event, now in its 5th year since its inception in 2010 in Tenerife.

With three days of talks, panels and inspiring videos, surfing was very much on the cards with delegates arriving a few days early to see what conditions the UK had offer (and in some cases each morning before the first presenters arrived on stage).

Although the swells at the bottom of the cliffs of the Bedruthan Steps Hotel were unable to match the usual fair for the professional surfers who flew in to attend the event it was clear from the audience, sponsors and exhibitors that the issues discussed at the event affected everyone within the surfing community and that there was a significant will to be part of a solution.

Playing Better Challenge

The conference will see the launch of the inaugural Playing Better Challenge in association with Hubbub. These Dragons will provide free mentorship to clubs in implementing sustainability practices which will cut costs allowing clubs funds to be spent where they matter most. Interested clubs in being selected to pitch their club and goals should email [email protected]

The common thread is the desire to incorporate sustainable development principles into our organisations, to reduce our environmental impacts, enhance the communities we live and work in and reduce costs of operations.

The event will be concluded by a number of breakout sessions lead by sports industry leaders, including:

Sport England,

University of Gloucestershire’s Students’ Union

Cardiff University

The Golf Environment Organisation

Topics include sustainability in community, professional and university sports, energy use in sports venues, sport and climate change in the run up to COP21 and Sport Governing bodies and Sustainability.
