6th November, London:
In March of next year, BBC Sport will host the 7th BASIS (British Association for Sustainable Sport) annual conference at BBC North, MediaCityUK, Salford. The two-day event demonstrates the BBC’s commitment to sustainability in sport, a topic being adopted as a strategic, operational and management issue by an increasing number of professional clubs, leagues, sport governing bodies and broadcasters around the world.
Convening 200 leaders at the nexus of sport and sustainability, the conference will explore the role and responsibility of sport in the inevitable transition to a more sustainable model. High profile keynote speakers and facilitators will feature in the engaging schedule, comprising site visits to venues of interest nearby, panel discussions, breakout sessions and an athlete and administrator dialogue.
The diverse programme of sessions is designed to explore the sustainability-sport interface from a range of angles and perspectives, with the focus of discussion ranging from individual venue management to the role of the sporting bodies, rights holders, broadcasters and wider sport industry in the global sport sustainability movement. BASIS will launch an innovative new certification system for sports stadiums and facilities, while thematic breakout sessions will explore the role of sport in sustainable practices, such as water management, energy use and recycling. Finally, attendance by high-level representatives from the environment and sport business sectors will foster discussions around the importance of sport in the global sustainability movement, positioning sport within the broader development dialogue.
Russell Seymour, Founder and Chair of BASIS, said he is “honoured to be partnering with BBC Sport for our annual conference. It is the mission of our Association to nurture and support sustainability and sustainable development in all aspects of sport. The support that the BBC is providing is invaluable and means that the coming event will be bigger and more impactful than ever before.”
Paula Stringer, Head of Production for BBC Sport, said “We’re delighted to be hosting next year’s BASIS Conference at MediaCityUK in Salford, the home of BBC Sport. We’re at the beginning of our sustainability journey and we recognise that sport broadcasting and production has a significant role to play in creating a sustainable future for the industry. We’re looking forward to sharing the progress we’ve made so far, learning from others about what they’ve achieved and being inspired to do more ourselves”.
